educational movements in the 19th century

The 19th century encompassed many changes in America. One change in particular that influenced our education system was the beginning of the public school system. This movement made education available to the masses. Reformers and education innovators of the time worked tirelessly to make education public instead of private, free, and state maintained. In this article we will review the era of educational history known as the "common school movement, or the "common school period". We will also discuss two of the major educational innovators that were integral in developing the first public schools, or common schools and their curriculum. The years 1830 until 1872 are known as the "common school movement" or the "common school period." Common-school advocates worked to establish a free elementary education accessible to everyone and financed by public funds. As such, they advocated public schools should be accountable to local school boards and state governments. They also helped establish compulsory school attendance laws for elementary-age children. By 1918, such laws existed in all states. Public High Schools were developed in the early 1800's as a public education alternative to the private academies of the 18th Century.  The schools focused on a practical curriculum with college preparatory classes. By the 1830s, a growing number of concerned Americans began to advocate at all levels for free public education, at least for white boys. In 1837, Horace Mann took control of the new Massachusetts Board of Education and pursued free, equal, non-religious schooling for all social classes, provided by trained, well-paid, professional teachers. His reforms set the standard for public education in the United States, and by 1870, all states had at least some free elementary schools. - See more at: http://ladlamag.blogspot.com/2014/11/educational-movements-in-19th-century.html#sthash.PmvfotOt.dpuf

TIPS FOR TEACHING ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS

Take time to plan carefully what will you do on the very first day as a way to give students a clear impression with the course content as well as your expectations. If you’re going to lecture on most days, lecture on the very first day if you are planning to interact students in discussions, do this on can be. Whatever methods you employ, your overall aim ought to be to engage your students in mastering.
Arrive early.Speak to students before class starts. A lot more important students in this manner will make them more likely to take part in class and also to find out. Ensure that the bedroom is ready and hang up up any necessary equipment. Additionally it is imperative that you check out the classroom a minimum of a week ahead of time to confirm seating arrangements, to find out what sort of equipment works, and, not least important, to make certain you realize where the classroom is.
Introduce yourself.
Place your name as well as the course title around the board. Tell the kids what you are and what you need to do.
Explain the program organization, requirements, major assignments, and policies.
Students will feel much more comfortable if you’re organized and prepared. Using a well-written, detailed syllabus prepared to hand out on day one is important (see Preparing a Syllabus). Mention course pre-requisites should there be any. Talk about the workload of the course, e.g., quantity of exams, number and length of papers, variety of books to learn. Review of your work hours and phone information. Take time to explain at length all policies, including those regarding attendance, academic integrity, grades, and requests for extensions or rescheduling of quizzes and exams. Make clear to students their responsibility to adhere to the University Policy on Academic Integrity, and also the actions you will take if they cannot.
Explain your expectations for sophistication participation.
Give students a feeling of your teaching style along with your expectations for their involvement. If attendance and sophistication participation are expected, make that clear on the students and tell them how you will record attendance (and whether are permitted to miss any classes without penalty), and also whether and how you will grade participation. It is also useful to explain to students why you value attendance and participation.
Create curiosity about this course material.
A successful first day leaves students enthusiastic about using course and understanding the material. Present your vision, or overview, in the course. Relate the course topic to current applications or issues. Communicate towards the students your a feeling of why the subject should be studied and understood.
Build a sense of community and hang a positive tone.
As Barbara Gross Davis points out, should you Cbuild a sense of community, students will perform better simply because they will feel coupled to the class and also to the trainer (p. 20). Try and learn your studentsnames a portion of the references down the page give suggestions on the way to accomplish this task, even during large classes. HOW TO HANDLE AN OUT-OF-CONTROL STUDENT

He (or she) is blatantly disrespectful. He makes fun of and laughs at other students. He%u2019s rude and silly. He%u2019s argumentative and attention-seeking. He is well known by every staff member and can describe the inside of the principal%u2019s office. Time-out has minimal effect and notes and phone calls home rarely do any good.
Its clear that there is little accountability at home and school administration is reluctant to suspend him for classroom behavior. Short of physically hurting another student, he is untouchable. And he knows it.
He is one of those rare students who has gotten a peek behind the curtain and has discovered that no matter what he does, within fifteen minutes or so he be right back out on the playground or in your classroom doing as he wishes.
Its disheartening and stressful, and you at the end of your rope. You ve tried everything. You done your research. You read all the books. You requested help and consultation from counselors and psychologists. You ve hashed and rehashed it out with your colleagues.
But to no avail.
And so here you are, deep into the school year, and other than a few brief and blissful periods of improved behavior, nothing has changed. In fact, if anything, it has gotten worse. He has now begun misbehaving right in front of you, literally daring you to do something about it.
All the while you%u2019ve been a saint. You%u2019ve worked hard to build rapport. You%u2019ve been patient and kind and forgiving. Your students love being in your class. It%u2019s just this one student. Why isn%u2019t he coming around? Why isn%u2019t he buying into your progra

2. Make an unwavering resolve for your classroom management plan.
An inconsistently followed classroom management plan is one of the most frequent teacher mistakes. It%u2019s also among the most detrimental. Because every time a rule is broken, so you ignore it, you lose a layer of trust from the students, cause resentment and jealousy, and send the unmistakable message that you simply dont really mean whatever you say.

Using a positive relationship with students makes everything easier, particularly classroom management. Once your students as you and trust you, they  want to make you happy, which experts claim will give you powerful leverage to help their behavior. And also the best news is, it isnt difficult.

Summarize the various theories of profit.

1. Dynamic Theory of Profit
The dynamic theory of profit was given by J.B. Clark. According to him profit accrues because the society is dynamic by nature. Since the dynamic nature of society makes future uncertain and any act, the result of which has to come in future, involves risk. Thus profit is the price of risk taking and risk bearing. It arises only in a dynamic society which means in a society where changes does not occur i.e. it is static by nature the risk element disappears and hence the profit element does not exist there.
Actually, a society is said to be dynamic when there is a change in its population, change in trends of the people, change in stock of the capital, change in the supply of entrepreneurs etc. when all these factors becomes constant, the future also becomes certain and the risk element disappears from the society.
According to Clark, profit is the result of an adjustment, which is brought about by the entrepreneurs themselves. They may find new techniques of production by inventing new machines. Their use reduces the cost of production and reduces the course of time as well and gives the entrepreneur higher profits. But when the use of machinery and production becomes common and used by the other entrepreneur operating in the economy. The supply of goods then increase and the prices fall. Hence the profit margin also goes down. Under this situation the profit is determined by the demand and supply of enterprise at a point where they are equal.
Criticism
This theory completely ignores the future or uncertainty. According to Prof. Knight only those changes, which cannot be foreseen, and which cannot be provided in advance will yield profits and not others. Also this theory often gives a misleading conclusion regarding the competition
. Marginal Productivity Theory of Profit
According to this theory, profit always equals to the marginal productivity of the entrepreneur. The marginal productivity of the entrepreneur cannot be evaluated in the case of the firm because there is only one entrepreneur in a firm. It is however can be easily done in an industry where the number of the firms can be calculated and hence the marginal productivity of various entrepreneurs can be measured.
According to this theory the profit depends upon the marginal production. Greater the marginal production greater will be the profit.
3. Wages Theory of Profit
According this theory the services of the entrepreneur are also classified as labour though of a superior type. These entrepreneurs do a lot of work in organizing the business unit as well. The entrepreneurs in the shape of profit pay to themselves for service just as managers are paid for their services. It means that profit is a wage for the entrepreneur for the services rendered by them.
4. Un-Certainty Breaking Theory of Profit
According to Prof. Knight
“Profit is the reward for uncertainty bearing and not the risk bearing”.
Prof. Knight has regarded uncertainty bearing as a factor of production. Knight’s theory classifies the position that profit arises because of the joint action of uncertainty bearing and capital.
5. Risk Bearing Theory of Profit
According to F.B. Hawley, “Profit is reward for risk bearing which is the most important function of an entrepreneur”. Hawley believes that risks are unpleasant and therefore no one likes to bear it, until and unless some reward is insured. Profit is a reward for bearing these risks

6. In addition, a managerial economist has to analyze changes in macro- economic indicators such as national income, population, business cycles, and their possible effect on the firm’s functioning.
7. He is also involved in advicing the management on public relations, foreign exchange, and trade. He guides the firm on the likely impact of changes in monetary and fiscal policy on the firm’s functioning.
8. He also makes an economic analysis of the firms in competition. He has to collect economic data and examine all crucial information about the environment in which the firm operates.
9. The most significant function of a managerial economist is to conduct a detailed research on industrial market.
10. In order to perform all these roles, a managerial economist has to conduct an elaborate statistical analysis.
11. He must be vigilant and must have ability to cope up with the pressures.

DEFINITION OF 'DERIVATIVE'

A security whose price is dependent upon or derived from one or more underlying assets. The derivative itself is merely a contract between two or more parties. Its value is determined by fluctuations in the underlying asset. The most common underlying assets include stocks, bonds, commodities, currencies, interest rates and market indexes. Most derivatives are characterized by high leverage.
Derivatives are generally used as an instrument to hedge risk, but can also be used for speculative purposes. For example, a European investor purchasing shares of an American company off of an American exchange (using U.S. dollars to do so) would be exposed to exchange-rate risk while holding that stock. To hedge this risk, the investor could purchase currency futures to lock in a specified exchange rate for the future stock sale and currency conversion back into Euros.

10 Of The Best Android KitKat Features

Google recently announced Android KitKat (version 4.4) with the Google Nexus 5 being the first smartphone that is powered by the mobile operating system. Android KitKat was designed to support backwards compatibility for over 1 billion older smartphones and tablets.  By requiring less memory, Android KitKat can run on entry-level devices that have as little as 512MB of RAM.

Google Android head Sundar Pichai said that the goal for 2014 is to “reach the next billion people.”  In emerging countries like Brazil, India, Russia, Indonesia, and Mexico, Android’s business is tripling every year.  In some of those countries, several manufacturers have been selling Android phones that are powered by the two-years-old Android Gingerbread (version 2.3) operating system. Android KitKat is intended to prevent older software from being sold in those emerging countries.

Android KitKat has a number of aesthetic enhancements and application improvements. Here is a list of 10 of the best KitKat features:

Android 4.4: An Evolution, Not A Revolution

good Android is right now. After years of flux and one or two failed experiments (Honeycomb, anyone?), Google's mobile operating system has finally found its feet, and looks and performs better than ever.

In fact, there's an excellent case for this being the best mobile OS on the market right now. Android offers power, flexibility, customisation and much more besides. Version 4.4 may not have the headline-grabbing upgrades that previous iterations have boasted, but that matters little, because what we have here is a world-leading platform, and the subtle tweaks performed by Google prove that the company has finally gotten the hang of creating a good OS and evolving it, rather than needlessly tearing up the rulebook with each update.

And beyond this there’s plenty else to get excited about. Things like KitKat’s ability to run on fumes – 512MB of RAM and 1GHz CPUs, for instance – is a huge boon for OEMs and consumers alike. From now on there’s no excuse for new handsets not to run on the latest iteration of Google’s Android software.

What’s more Google has apparently passed down a new Android Bull, which specifically decrees that all new Android devices MUST run on the latest build of Android. And if OEMs don’t play ball they’re likely to get more than a slap on the wrist, too:

“Starting February 2014, Google will no longer approve GMS distribution on new Android products that ship older platform releases. Each platform release will have a “GMS approval window” that typically closes nine months after the next Android platform release is publicly available. These issues blighted the Nexus 4 and are present in Android 4.4, but the good news is that Google is aware of this and is rolling out 4.4.1 (and 4.4.2) as we speak. This update reduces the waiting time when you fire up the camera app and apparently strikes a more agreeable balance between image quality and capture speed.

Our Nexus 5 recieved the update recently and we can confirm that the camera performance is vastly improved: it no longer takes an age to actually capture a shot, and the annoying motion blur is reduced.
